Frequently-asked Questions and Answers
Q. What is the Power and Control Wheel?
A. A tool created in Duluth, Minnesota (USA) to understand abusive behaviours for manipulating and dominating another person. The Wheel was designed specifically to highlight ‘men’ as primary ‘perpetrator’. However, latest research identifies abuse as being ‘non-gender’ specific. UK’s CAFCASS refers to the Duluth Model for assessing Safeguarding risk when completing the Section 7 reports.
The Wheel is used by many couple’s counsellors; it’s a good idea to ask the counsellor beforehand if he or she refers to the Duluth Model. Social workers, legislative workers and educators also use the Wheel in the topic of ‘domestic abuse’.
Q. How can I identify if it is ‘parental alienation?
A. To identify if what you’re seeing or hearing is ‘parental alienation, you’re able to refer to Dr Amy Baker’s ‘Five Factor Model’, known now as the ‘Baker Model for Identifying Parental Alienation‘. Dr William Bernet introduced the fifth factor in the Model. Dr Craig Childress’ model refers to three diagnostic indicators.
Q. What are the tactics used by somebody obstructing parenting, alienating the children i.e. parental alienation?
A. Refer to Dr Amy Baker’s 17 ‘alienating behaviours’ Strategies an alienator uses to sever the primary attachment of the child towards the targeted parent.
Q. How can I identify narcissistic abuse?
A. Look for red flags, patterns of manipulation and control, and the cycle of abuse. You’ll find these patterns on the Power and Control Wheel. Please try to stay away from the ‘gender’ / ‘male privilege’ version. Abuse is about ‘power and control’, not ‘gender’.
Q. Can children recover from the abuse of ‘alienation’?
A. Yes, with proper support and education. In UK, Karen and Nick Woodall run a program. Visit their site for The Family Separation Clinic. “The Family Separation Clinic offers specialist services to families experiencing divorce or separation and, in particular, those where children have rejected a parent or are at risk of doing so” (The Family Separation Clinic website).
